Questions, questions, questions––the heart of eighth-grade social studies. I intend to have a classroom where questions and inquiries are more important than answers and conclusions, where respect and deference prevail over insistence and dominance, and where listening and responding are equivalent to speaking and convincing.

I’ve divided the curriculum into three phases, each to investigate a different topic: (1) Russian geography and Tsarist history, the nuclear threat; (2) George Orwell’s Animal Farm; and (3) Minorities: Japanese-American internment and the Ku Klux Klan. I will rotate these units through each of the three groups. One unit becomes a database for comparison with another. . . . For instance, knowledge about Tsar Ivan IV of Russia provides a vehicle for comprehending Napoleon’s leadership on Animal Farm––and vice versa.

Ellen never heard of contacting parents directly except to conference about their kids. She thought this role was the purview of the administration. She wondered how this approach would work. Perhaps it could be done through email or other electronic medium and could possibly become interactive. But, Ellen wondered, “Would I want this on my plate along with all my other responsibilities?
